So where is Grassy Pond, and why is it important? Grassy Pond is a small community on the outskirts of Gaffney, SC. It lies just north of Gaffney and just south of the South Carolina and North Carolina boarder on SC Highway 150.
Sometime during the early to mid 1800’s McCraw ancestors made their way to this community where they prospered until today. Likely, most of the McCraw’s and McGraw’s living in the piedmont area of the Carolinas were descended from this community. Indeed, I can trace my lineage to this community. My great-great grandfather was Asberry Burton McCraw, born May 6, 1837 and died December 17, 1915. He is buried, along with his three wives, at Grassy Pond Baptist Church, of which he was an elder and helped to found.
